CHAPTER 13

After keeping her gaze on the café table nearly the entire time she’d been telling me all that she had, Dana finally looked up, meeting my eyes. “I know you want to see Josh, but just be prepared. Even once he knows that you know about the tragedy in his past, he still may not be ready to let his wall fully come down.”

Undaunted, I shook my head, sniffing back a few last tears. “I don't care. I just need to see him right now. I just need to tell him that I finally understand now why he puts his wall up. It’s just not fair that he feels like he needs one in the first place. It’s just not fair that he has to live the way he does. He doesn’t deserve it. He deserves more than a business arrangement with a woman. He deserves to have real love in his life again.”

With a little smile, Dana got up from the table and extended a hand to me. “I think you’re damned right about that. Let’s go.”

We’d walked to town, and now we speed-walked back. Dana was going to give PJ and Miss Fluff their dinner while I talked to Josh. But when we arrived at the mansion, Alice said he’d already come and left.

“Some of the Bloodborns tried to attack a farmer and his family on one of the farms just to the west of town. Thankfully, they’re all okay, but Commander Scott took Steve and a few other members of the pride out there to set up watch patrols for the night. He said he’d probably be back in an hour or two.” Alice now paused, studying me with an expression I couldn’t quite read. “But in the meantime, Hannah, why don’t I feed the fur-kids and take PJ out to use the bathroom while you and Dana have a bite to eat in the dining room. Then afterward, once you’ve eaten, Commander Scott asked that I show you something.”

Mystified, I just stared at her a second. “Show me what? What is it?”

She just shook her head. “No, ma’am. No hints will be given. Just go ahead and wash up and eat.”

Dana and I soon did, speculating on just what on earth Josh could want Alice to show me. We didn’t even have any good guesses.

Once we’d finished eating, we found Alice doing some cleaning in the casual kitchen. Still dressed in her starched black-and-white maid’s uniform, though now wearing white tennis shoes and socks instead of the dressier flats she usually wore with nylons while working, she led our little group into the vast backyard and toward the woods at the edge of it. Dana and I walked along behind her, glancing at each other, still mystified. Although it was about seven in the evening, it was still plenty light out since it was almost June and the sun's last rays still shone until nine or so.

When we reached the woods, Alice paused briefly, brushing a few strands of her salt-and-pepper hair out of her face.
